Gulliver initially believes the floating island is a large cloud. When Gulliver sees people moving about on the floating island, he calls to them, and they lower a system of pulleys to pull Gulliver up. The people on the island are strange, they have slanting heads, and their clothing is decorated with pictures of musical instruments or astronomical signs. The people also have short attention spans and live in poorly built homes. The Laputians are obsessed with mathematics.
