The celebratory bombing is a symbol of victory, noting that Germany has surrendered and Hitler is dead. However, the soldiers on Okinawa, including Ray and Big John, know the celebration has nothing to do with them. Ray dies after the celebratory bombs are fired. Though the war is over in Germany, it is still ongoing in Japan.
