Patriotism is a major theme of the book. Patriotism is always high when a nation is under attack and this was true of the people of The Greatest Generation during the World War II years. The nation was under attack and they wanted to do what they could do. Many people dropped out of school to enlist in the military instead of waiting for the draft.
