Why were the first seven of Steelkilt's men able to come out of their imprisonment?

The first seven followers of Steelkilt surrendered and agreed to the captain's terms because they had poor food, no light, and no fresh air in the hold. They also feared that the longer they maintained their position, the more likely that the captain would punish them severely when they did come out.
