Eurypides changed the structure of Attic tragedy, showing inner lives, strong female characters, intelligent slaves, and satires of Greek heroes. Born in Salamis in 480 BC, Eurypides father was Mnesarchus or Mnesarchides; his mother was Cleito. Eurypides questioned religion, and he was influenced by Protagoras, Socrates, and Anaxagoras. His greatest plays include Alcestis, Medea, Electra, and the Bacchae.
