Cannie makes special note of the way in which Nifkin is a source of unconditional love.... and a purpose for living. The relationship between Nifkin and Cannie foreshadows Cannie's pregnancy. Having Nifkin forces Cannie to be responsible because he relies on her completely. When Cannie becomes pregnant, the same will also be true of her baby.
