Laura Wilkes is the central patient in the story titled by the name Laura. Laura comes to Gildiner because she wants to learn about stress and its impact on her herpes. Gildiner uncovers that Laura has been drawn to men who need Laura to save her from their own problems. Gildiner determines that this compulsion began when Laura was abandoned by her father. He left her to care for her two younger siblings by herself for nearly seven months. Laura covered for her father because she was loyal to him even though he was not a good father.
