Education and life experience is a constant motif in the book. Graves' pre- and post-war life focused on obtaining a formal education. His adolescent years were spent at Charterhouse School, selected by his father, and his university education was obtained at St. John's College, Oxford, where he completed a bachelor's degree in literature, though he took considerably longer to do so than most. This formal academic education was interrupted by Graves' military service.
