Bobby is Susan's husband and the voice of reason throughout the novel. Ten years older than Susan, Bobby is emotionally centered, and responds to every tense moment in the novel with a peaceful spirit and a logical mind. Bobby is a free jazz enthusiast and musicologist. Jazz, however, is not merely Bobby's career. Rather he seems to live by Ornette Coleman's harmolodics theory. Coleman said: "That's how I have always wanted musicians to play with me: on a multiple level. I want them to follow themself, but to be with me" (126).
