Why is Moyan unhappy despite her best efforts to avoid pain in the story, Kindness?

Moyan has become what Professor Shan was before her and even a little of what her mother was, a depressed woman who could not get past the pain of heart break. Even though Moyan avoided a relationship with a lover, she is still heart broken by the people who touched her life and she pushed away due to her attempts to avoid pain.
