Who is Wagner from Faust and what is their importance?

Wagner is a scholar and one of Faust's colleagues. He wants to acquire all of Faust's knowledge, and yet, he has no desire to follow in Faust's footsteps in order to attain that knowledge. Wagner refuses to renounce God.
