How does the author use foreshadowing in Gods and Generals?

At the end of the novel, Shaara foreshadows Lee's defeat at the Battle of Gettysburg when he describes Stuart's bold, but useless ride around the Union army. As a result, Stuart does not get Lee the information he so desperately needs.
