Gabriel doesn't want to marry Deborah because he doesn't love her. She was his older sister's friend, a caregiver to his mother, and she carried great shame. Gabriel marries Deborah because she is supportive, but more importantly, he believes that their marriage was foreordained, that the "Lord had given him Deborah to help him stand", and that "the Lord had sent him to her, to raise her up, to release her from that dishonor which was hers in the eyes of men."
