Why does Elizabeth fear Richard's ambition?

Elizabeth feared that Richard's ambition would find them in a situation in which they'd never marry. Richard didn't want to get married until he'd finished his schooling and would be able to provide for her. Respecting his feelings, she neglected to tell him about her pregnancy, believing that she was protecting him. Had she told Richard about the baby, he would likely not have taken his own life.
