One major theme in the novel, Go Tell It on the Mountain, is duty and responsibility. This theme is illustrated through Gabriel's refusal to take responsibility for Deborah and her child, as well as his refusal to do the right thing by his family. We also see Gabiel put himself and hs pride before his duty to hi congregation.
