How does the author use foreshadowing in the novel, Girl in Pieces?

After arriving in Tucson, Charlie prepares a tender kit, a metal box of the things that she needs to cut herself and then tend those wounds later. Charlie’s act of preparing this box seems to foreshadow the fact that Charlie will backslide on her recovery.
