The desire for freedom is another theme. Gideon was a largely uneducated, though seemingly fairly intelligent, man who is willing to work through the steps of an appeal for the chance for freedom. While it might be said that Gideon found himself in the penitentiary with a five-year sentence ahead of him and has plenty of time to do his legal work, it's important to note that it's not a simple matter.
