Chicago is the overarching setting of the novel. This is the setting where Jerome grew up and died and wanders around as a ghost. The city also functions as a character in the novel because Jerome is introduced to racism and structural inequality through his own experience in Chicago which is built upon when he learns more about Mississippi from Emmett's perspective.
