When Aunt Patty asks Willa Jo whether Little Sister drank any of the dirty water at the fair, Willa Jo says that the water was not dirty, but she is told it may not have looked dirty but it most certainly was "bad." "Nobody else drank it," the reader reads on, "Nobody but Baby." Thus, the reader does not know how and why Baby died, but this detail foreshadows Baby's death.
