To gather and find the color 'blue' in the story is to find something very rare and unique. Symbolically, then, the author is talking about the beauty of the human soul and spirit. Kira feels 'less' of a person because of her deformity and through her personal quest to find 'blue' she realizes her own worth; she finds her spirit and her soul. It is as valueable as 'blue'.
