Who is Leonidas from Gates of Fire and what is their importance?

Leonidas is the Spartan king who was charged with choosing the 300. His men love him and are loyal to his cause because he fights with them.... beside them, not behind them. Leonidas and his men are killed during the third day of battle.... their corpses were decapitated by Xerxes forces.
