Thaumaste, an English scholar, hears of Pantagruel's reputation and visits him to test him with a legal case. The next day, Pantagruel discusses the case with Thaumaste, and Panurge makes the Englishman look like a fool. Thaumaste praises the learning and abilities of both Pantagruel and Panurge.
