Galileo tells the Senators a lie about the telescope that he introduces to them to secure a raise at the University where he works as a mathematician. The lie that Galileo tells is that he is presenting a "new instrument" that he has worked on for seventeen years. The truth is, Galileo recently learned of the telescope from a new student from Holland. Galileo had one made from the description that Ludovico ( the student from Holland) has given him and passes it off to the Senators as his own.
