Transience is rooted in the throw-away nature of modern production where it costs more to repair something than to replace it and where economies of scale make it more profitable to sell new products than to build enduring products. Transience affects people in that they expect things to change or be disposed of after a certain time, and eventually they expect even their relationships to be disposable.
