Christian’s sketchpad is symbolic of the dark side of human desires. Christian never carries his own weapon, signaling to others that he is not interested in causing harm or participating in violence. His sketchpad, however, filled with drawings of “severed heads on sticks,” “guns,” and “slaughter” indicated his true passion (176). The innate nature of even the most innocent human man in this scenario is dark and sadistic. Although Christian does not wish to reveal his interests and creations to others, his true nature cannot be hidden from those who see past the image he puts forth and into his human depths.
