Naomi was Ben's wife and the narrator of Book II. When she entered his parents' grief-filled home for the first time, she instantly knew how to lovingly deal with the Holocaust survivors. Oddly, this made Ben jealous. Her tiny apartment was carefully organized, and she loved lame jokes, as well as 1950s science fiction movies, siding with the aliens. Naomi loved all genres of music, and she collected and sang lullabies for Ben. After eight years together, she no longer sang him songs, and he missed it greatly. Naomi, however, has become angry over Ben's self-pity because his childhood not happy like hers.

When Ben's hero, Jakob Beer, the narrator of Book I, died, Naomi suggested that he go to Greece to collect his journals. Ben went, even knowing that he was dooming his marriage. He thought about Naomi fondly while he had an affair in Greece, and he wondered about what kind of reception he'd receive upon his return. After four months away, he knew that he needed Naomi's love.
