Who is Luis Carlos Galan

Real-life Colombian politician Luis Carlos Galan makes a brief appearance in the narrative - at the political rally where he was assassinated. He was something of a populist, waging a campaign against the drug cartels that he saw as destroying life in Colombia. In the novel, Chula's mother, like many other real world citizens of Colombia, idolizes him and is devastated when he is killed.
