Abuela Maria is Chula and Cassandra's grandmother, Mama's mother. She is hard-working and compassionate, sensitive and fragile. When she accidentally leads her grandchildren Tica and Memo into the middle of a conflict between guerillas and paramilitary, she becomes extremely guilt-ridden and depressed.
