The novel's main conflict is centered around Claudia's need to feel different, which in turn, leads to her journey (running away from home) to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. After she discovers the statue of Angel, however, the conflict focuses on Claudia's determination to solve the mystery of the angel's origins.
