Morven’s scream symbolizes the call for Anya’s help, and the tie between the two sisters. This is also how Nix gives an aural signal of the start of the novel and the end of it, as well as Morven’s own transformation over time. The opening sentence of Chapter 1 is, “The scream was very loud and went on for a very long time” (5). Nix explains how Anya has to listen to Morven’s scream to discern when she is truly troubled or not, as Morven screams frequently.
