Why do the efforts of Jon Wood and Leon Longbridge fail in "There Are Three"?

The attempt to move Frightful's eggs to a wooden scrape in a sycamore tree does not work because Frightful does not follow them and returns to the bridge. The eggs drop in temperature and Jon and Leon decide they must replace them on the bridge or they will die.
