In the story, Oh, What Avails, Joan used to look out through the stained glass window near the front door in her house. The glass contained mainly red, and so her world was colored in sinister or ugly tones. This reflects the attitude she learned from her mother, that she is somehow special and should judge the rest of the world. This attitude, like the glass, has colored her perception of life ever since.
