When Victor entered the harbor to ask directions, why did the stranger answer rudely, "Maybe you come to a place that will prove much to your taste..."

Victor asks why this guy is being so rude. The man answers,

“I do not know,” said the man, “what the custom of the English may be, but it is the custom of the Irish to hate villains.”

The people believed that Victor was the murderer of the man (Clerval) they found the previous day.
