Tradition is the main theme in this book. The predominant theme throughout the book is the loss of traditional ways of life of the Appalachian Mountain people. From the introduction through the final chapter, the editor and authors of the articles stress the need to retain these old traditions and customs, and a sense of despair at the clear lack of interest in the old ways shown by younger generations.
