Mountain City today differs from how it appeared in the early 1900's, in that some of the old businesses are gone. In the early 1900's, Mountain City boasted several hotels, a railroad depot, a sawmill, a gristmill, a tavern, a café, churches and a school. Today, Mountain City has three gas stations, a mobile home sales lot, a summer gift shop, a post office, a pants factory, several churches, and a square dance hall. The fountain and the gazebo are gone and the highway being widened will increase the traffic, noise, and pollution.
