As a young boy, Lewis learns lessons from his father that are designed to build character. When the recoil of a .45-caliber pistol accidentally blackens Lewis' eye, the young boy learns that he should not cry in front of other men. He also learns to complete tasks when his father assists him in completing the next shot with the same pistol. By accompanying his father on hunting trips from an early age, young Lewis learns to keep up with adults and not complain about difficult circumstances. Chesty's lessons are designed to strengthen his son's mind as well as his body.
