Chesty's career as a Marine inspires young Lewis to pursue a career in the military as an adult. Living on base, young Lewis is exposed to the sights and sounds of military life. Lewis is fascinated by the bulging tattooed muscles of the Marines, and even develops the unwanted habit of using their "colorful" language. As a child, Lewis imitates at home the war games field exercises he witnesses on base. Lewis knows that his father wants him to succeed in a military career and carry on the Puller name in the Marines. He strives to please his father, and begins "training" for the Marines at an early age.
