What happened to the potential of ibogaine?

Although in the early 1900's when a chemical alkaloid was derived from ibogaine that led to the anticipation of the cure for male impotence, Ibogaine became quickly forgotten. Although it had never been proven to be addictive, it was added to the Schedule 1, the most restricted and controlled category in the USA, making continued research unlikely.
