Major Lockyear does have a duty to protect the Aborigines. He is in charge of a military regiment who are meant to protect innocent people. Since England decided to claim Australia as her own land, the people living there should have come under the protection of people like Major Lockyear. This was the Aborigines' land first, and he should respect that. Besides this, he comes from a more powerful society which needs to make sure its people do not hurt or take advantage of people who cannot properly fight back.
