Why is Greta sad when Mrs. Morrill gives her one of Princess' kittens?

Greta remembers the way the piece of strawberry pie that Mrs. Morrill gave her disappeared when she crossed back to her own time. Greta is afraid that she will not be able to take the kitten back to her own time.
