How does the foreshadowing of Abbey being missing create suspense

Believing that Abbey is missing brings out a side we haven't seen in Paine... the protective dad. Paine makes no secret of the fact that any danger to his daughter would bring him straight back to Luna and Dusty. This creates suspense, as we don't yet know what will happen.
