In Chapter One, Noah Underwood's father, Paine, is in jail. At first the reader does not know the reason, but there are enough hints that Paine was arrested and jailed for what he considered a noble cause. There is tension in the home over Paine's incarceration. It is Father's Day, and Noah's mother is naturally concerned that Noah is upset because he visited his father in jail. Abbey, Noah's younger sister, acts out from the anger she feels over her father's situation by making disparaging remarks about him. But deep down, she is hurt that her father is not home with them.

Over the course of the story, Noah begins to understand why his father acts the way he does... the way his father reacted to his own mother's death, and the difficulties he faced as a child. In learning to understand his father's past, he also comes to understand his actions, and why he is motivated to do the things he does. Noah is able to set aside his embarrassment over his father being in jail, as well as to help his father find the justice he seeks. Abbey joins him without giving it a second thought.
