I think the cover reflects when Juli decided to raise chicks for the science fair, her father helped her build an incubator. He taught her how to tell if the eggs were vibrant by a process called candling.This ties into the way the protagonists sees the world. They are both coming of age. They see the world and themselves, often flipped around until their world and identity comes into focus.
