Originally a television producer, Sidney Lumet later turned his sights to filmmaking. He made more than one film per year during the 1960s, and he was known for the great rapport he shared with the actors under his direction. As his subject matter grew more serious, Lumet was lauded for his ability to bring out the emotional intensity in his actors. Film historians divide his work into three broad categories; literary and theatrical adaptations, projects for profit and enjoyment, and social dramas. Most of Lumet's films are set in New York City.
