Ken Russell was a popular British director during the 1970s. His depiction of famous composers in a series of biography films produced for television were considered very controversial. As a result, the press called him self-indulgent and a sensationalist. Russell had a reputation for pushing the edges of controversial sexuality in his subject matter.
