The collection consists of seven short stories. Two of these, “The Five-Carat Soul Bottom Bone Band” and “Mr. P & the Wind” are longer stories divided into chapters. In the former, the author uses the separate chapters to tell four distinct stories about the young life of the narrator, Butter. “Mr. P & the Wind” tells one distinct story that follows the traditional three-act story structure. The first two chapters consist of an introduction and rising action, as Get Along describes the arrival of Mr. P at the zoo and how his arrival changed things for the animals. The third chapter, “The Wind” introduces the major conflict as Mr. P attempts to contact the Wind, despite the animals' warnings. The story reaches a climax in the fourth chapter with Rubs' death, and in the fifth chapter the conflict is resolved with the deaths and reincarnation of Mr. P, Get Along, and Scratch the jaguar.
