“The First Foster Family” begins with the siblings being taken in by a foster family which is headed by the father of the palm tree boy Loung considered a friend of sorts at her last camp. Her initial joy at having a new family dissipates as she quickly realizes that she and her siblings are being accepted in exchange for their hard work around the family’s home. The siblings begin to resent the new family, as the mother is rude to them and looks through their possessions, telling them they will amount to nothing. Paof, an elder son of the family, tries to sexually assault Loung one day while the two are running errands together, further alienating her from the foster family.

Loung and Chou do make a friend, however, named Pithy, and the three go into the forest one day to collect firewood. There, they become thirsty and encounter a Youn soldier who invites Loung to follow him to a water source nearby. Loung goes alone, and quickly realizes her error when he takes his pants off and tries to take hers off too, in order to rape her. She kicks him fiercely in the groin and escapes with Pithy and Chou, who are rattled. Upon returning home to the foster family, the mother scolds Chou and Loung for how little wood they have with them, enraging Loung, who reflects on how much love her father had for her and how much potential he told her she had.
