What does Childbirth represent?

Childbirth, in the novel, is a symbol of the oppression of women. Medicine in Westeros is not equipped to handle complications with pregnancy, and birth control is not permitted. Women are expected to have as many children as possible once they marry, only stopping when they enter menopause or die.
