Why didn't Christopher receive his sister's letters in the novel, Finding Rebecca?

Christopher doesn't receive Rebecca's letters until almost a year after she sends her last one, as his father hid the letters from his son. Christopher only found out about them because he accidentally overheard his father and Uli reference them in a conversation.
