Why does the narrator delight in Chloe's demise?

It is not Chloe's death that delights the narrator, but how he views death. The narrator enjoys knowing that one day you are living and the next day you are "worm food." It reminds him that there is an end to this mediocrity and he will be freed from it at some point.
